ASU One Tour Visits Lowndes County

One ASU Tour Makes First Stop at Calhoun High School

Alabama State University presented more than $150,000 in scholarships to Lowndes County Students during the first stop on the One ASU Tour.

Alabama State University took the good news about the great things that are going on at the University to The Calhoun School in Letohatchee, Ala., on Tuesday, March 14.

The event was the launch of the One ASU Tour that will take Interim President Leon C. Wilson, the Admissions Office and other ASU representatives on the road to various locations across the state and into Georgia.

"We are excited about having the opportunity to share Alabama State University's story with potential students, parents and alumni," said Wilson. "We want high school students to know that ASU has a diverse offering of academic programs, as well as cutting-edge research, engaging student activities and an award-winning athletics program. When they make their decisions about higher education, we want Alabama State University to be at the top of their list."

The One ASU Tour group was met by a throng of Calhoun students, teachers and administrators. In addition to Wilson and University Admissions recruiters, the tour also included members of the Mighty Marching Hornets band, Student Orientation Services leaders, ASU Cheerleaders and several of the ASU student recruitment team.

One of the primary goals of the tour is to recruit students to attend the University.

"The inaugural One ASU Tour stop at The Calhoun School was a high-energy, impactful, culmination of commitment, alumni support and school administrative collaboration " said Dr. Courtney Griffin, ASU's assistant vice president for Enrollment Management. "The Office of Admissions and Recruitment was elated to present acceptance certificates to 24 graduating Calhoun seniors, award five academic scholarships (totaling almost $150,000 over four academic years), acknowledge one band scholarship to a future Mighty Marching Hornet and offer on-site admission to an additional nine members of the Calhoun Tigers Class of 2017. In addition to inspiring and encouraging seniors, 32 members of the class of 2018 eagerly submitted applications for admissions in anticipation of also joining the Hornet Family. While motivating students to score high, aim high, and fly high with ASU on the upcoming ACT exam, the University provided insight and excitement around why IT'S A GREAT TIME TO BE A HORNET! Events such as these leave lasting impressions not just for ASU's growth in enrollment, but also for expanding the reach into families and communities across the State of Alabama."

The Calhoun leg of the One ASU Tour was initiated by Darren Dubose, a 2015 ASU graduate and former SGA President who taught at Calhoun for a year before enrolling in graduate school at Texas A&M University. Dubose was one of several ASU alums who attended the event.

"We were thrilled to receive donations from two ASU alumnae who teach at Calhoun," said Zillah M. Fluker, ASU's vice president for Institutional Advancement. "They really gave from their hearts and out of their deep love for ASU. Their names will be placed on the Sesquicentennial Honor Roll, along with others who are giving during our commemoration of the University's 150th anniversary."

The One ASU Tour is part of a broader initiative that will encompass the engagement of alumni and the business community, as well as potential partners and students during our Sesquicentennial year.
